Non-Toxic Beds

Recently my son decided that he had outgrown his twin size loft bed that he had gotten around age eight or nine. I started to argue, but then realized that he IS 5'10" and wears size 11 shoe. The search for a new bed was on. We settled on a (real wood, of course) full size bed with a shelf headboard and storage drawers underneath. As a matter of fact, you can take a look at it here:

It only took about a week to arrive, and then my son (13) put it together by himself. There are many things I like about this bed aside from the fact that it has NO MDF/particle board. It also has storage underneath the bed, so we were able to eliminate his old dresser as well. But most importantly, the wood slats underneath allow you to go without a box spring under your mattress. I personally don't know why we still have beds requiring box springs, but I guess everyone has their own needs, and perhaps it fills some need somewhere. Here is where his "nice" bed gets "awesome."

Of course he needed a new mattress, and I knew right where to go. (Before I go on, and if it's been bothering you since I said ^^up there^^ that I bought him a full size bed, yes I realize a full size is the same length as a twin! But a full size bed allows stretching out and his feet can hang off if they need to, whereas the bars on his loft bed probably annoyed him when his feet hit them!)

Now for the best part...I chose a chemical-free foam set from NonToxicBeds.com. We got a firm foam layer, a medium foam layer, with a memory foam layer on top, which comes out to about 8" or so of foam. It's about the same thickness as a mattress. HE IS IN HEAVEN. I'll admit, I wasn't sure how it would turn out. But when the box arrived about a week after ordering, and I felt the memory foam for the first time, I knew he was going to love it. Of course, his younger sister came in his room, jealous that SHE didn't get a memory foam layer! I guess I will have to work on that. Anyway, check out the link below to see your options. The foam layers come in all sizes, and can even be used as a solution to put a layer over your wrapped mattress to eliminate the plastic sound and feel.
